WRESTLEMANIA WEEKEND REVIEW #12

We’re at the Pearl Theater, which is at Palms Resort and, of course, casino. The building is actually good. It’s way better than that shit Collective building. Actual production values! What the fuck is happening. Hosts are Jonny Laquasto & So Calorie Valorie. Not that you can hear them. Eddie Sideburns is still in the viewing room with me. Yay!

Mark Andrews & Flash Morgan Webster vs. Vaughan Vertigo & Guy Cool

I like comms calling Flash “unpredictable” as he does the same spots he’s done on every show he’s been on so far. Subculture coming over here and just having the same match three times is a choice. Guy Cool does a solid job of changing things on the fly when shit goes wrong. I respect it. Mandrews takes it with an SSP. *¾

Steven Borden vs. Kiran Grey

Borden looks a lot like his dad. He moves like him too. Two green guys doing green guy things here. Grey does a nice legsweep but he has several annoying ticks. Borden bumps early on a neckbreaker. You can tell these two haven’t had a lot of reps. With his crazy athleticism, Borden has huge potential. I like him throwing Sting spots in the match. Borden wins with the full nelson slam. *½

Ricochet & his mates vs. Rich Swann, Michael Oku & Sidney Akeem

Kaun has a good time working Swann. Having someone bump around for him really helps. Ricochet is having a nice time working heel. Keeping his shit in check. Using his speed to be an asshole. Swann does a load of thigh slaps. I’ve not seen that many this weekend so he really stands out. In a bad way. The match is a bit messy. Often the teaming stuff doesn’t work. From both sides. Just very awkward. A bad T-Gimmick sets up a lionsault from Ricochet and then Tia Leone, or whatever his name is, even botches sitting on Akeem for the pin. This was a fucking mess, lads. *

CMLL World Championship

Hechicero (c) vs. Jonathan Gresham

On seeing the X on Hechicero’s gear I ask Eddie what his mutant ability is. “He’s an alchemist”. Oh, fair play, that would come in handy. This is technically very nice. Gresham is told to tie up his shoelaces. “You bald, short bastard” – Eddie. Pop. Gresham’s brain is too cold to function normally. Hechicero does a bang up job of selling the leg after Gresh behaves like a cunt and goes after it. Gresham does the ‘chops don’t work/ballshot’ gimmick. The trouble with watching everything Mania weekend is all the spot recycling.

These two have decent chemistry, and Gresham slipping out of Hechicero’s stuff feels legitimate. Hechicero just can’t put him away due to his wily technical skills. Meanwhile, Gresham can’t win because he’s a midget. Hechicero’s selling gets a bit wonky, but he drops Gresh on his head and rolls him up to retain. ***

Sin City Street Fight

QT Marshall vs. Paul Walter Hauser

PWH is so bad at wrestling. I love him but he sucks. QT dropkicks him into the rail, and he’s supposed to go over and just fails. QT apparently refuses to believe Hauser is a pro-wrestler. Me too brother, me too. You can call a chicken a cow but it don’t make it so.

Oh no, man, not barbwire. They’re certainly bringing in the plunder to cover for the lack of ability. QT runs the blade and gets some colour. It’s a lot of claret.

Hauser once again fails to kick out after being put through a table. That lifting the one arm business doesn’t work for me, brother.

Texas Cloverleaf from Hauser and QT taps like a little bitch after some Austin style gushing. *. Bonus points for Hauser falling through a door on his way out. “That’s one of the worst matches I’ve ever seen” – Eddie.

MLP Women’s Championship

Gisele Shaw (c) vs. Persephone vs. Shotzi Blackheart vs. Killer Kelly

We have some awkwardness with so many moving parts. Shotzi does really well and nails all her spots. They frequently have someone out on the floor for ages. Normally two people. It doesn’t really make sense. The more stuff happens, the better Shotzi gets. Sometimes you have just a great day at the office. Shotzi missile dropkicks Persesphone off Gisele’s shoulders in a BANGING spot. Persephone’s bump is fucking sick. Kelly busts out the tarantula hanging choke. Persephone escapes, kills Kelly with her powerbomb and Shaw steals the pin. ***¼

Hot damn, that ruled! The spot work was clean as fuck. It felt important and Shotzi absolutely fucking killed it. Maybe the best performance I’ve ever seen from her. Everything was so clean, but the intensity was next level.

Desmond Xavier, Zachery Wentz & Myron Reed vs. Mistico, Mascara Dorada & Amazing Red

Red is looking slick here. I’ve not seen him in a few years, and he was way slower a few years ago. This is very fast paced and very spotty. There’s not much selling but the pace of everything is impressive. There’s a lot of slapping on the thighs. Some of the ideas are fly and some of them are just stupid. I hate it. It’s just a load of wank isn’t it. Mistico forces Reed to tap out. N/R. You might like it if you like spots, I guess.

The 411:

Some surprisingly decent stuff in the midcard here. Some wanky spotfests and a quite dreadful Paul Hauser match. Production and venue were good, and this is the third best show I’ve seen so far.
